Why was the test introduced?: The Driver CPC certification process was introduced across the EU under directive 2003/59/EC . From 10th September 2008 all new professional Bus drivers and 10th September 2009 all new professional Truck drivers must pass the Driver CPC theory tests before applying for a Driving and Practical Test. The purpose of Driver CPC is to set and maintain high standards of road safety, health and safety and driving among professional drivers (those driving for a living) of buses and trucks
How many Driver CPC theory tests are there?: All bus and truck drivers must pass 2 Driver CPC theory tests, a multiple choice test and a test consisting of case studies (bus or truck specific) with associated questions, these case studies reflect typical situations faced in the working environment.
Can I take the tests in any order?: Yes you can take the Driver CPC theory tests in any order.
Do I need to pass a CAT D Bus or CAT C Truck theory test before I take the Driver CPC theory tests?: Yes, it’s a pre requisite of taking the Driver CPC theory tests. Also you must present a valid learner permit on the day of testing as part of the identification checks. If you do not have an Irish drivers licence or Irish learner permit for CAT D or CAT C you will not be allowed to sit the test.
Is the CPC test mandatory?: Yes, if you do not hold a full licence for a truck or bus before the Driver CPC comes into force (that is 10 September 2008 for buses and 10 September 2009 for trucks). You must pass the Driver CPC theory test before you can apply for the driving and practical tests, if you intend to drive a bus/truck professionally (for a living).
How do I apply to take the test?: You can apply On-line by going to www.theorytest.ie or telephone 1890 606 106 (Lo Call Rate).
What happens when I get to the Centre?: The Test Centre staff will check your documentation (confirmation letter) and confirm your identity (valid/current drivers licence or learner permit) .You will then be signed in and taken to a work station to commence the test. Once you have completed your test you will be handed your score report which advises of the test result. Please have a look at the video presentation to see the full process.
What can I study in order to pass the test?: Study material is available from the Theorytest.ie web site. In addition careful study of the ‘Rules of the Road’ and manuals such as the ‘The Official DSA Guide to Driving Buses / Coaches and Heavy Goods Vehicles’ will give you all the information you need to help you take and pass the CPC tests.
How long will the test take?: The overall test time for the CPC-MCQ test is 2hours and 35 minutes. This time includes an optional practice session and satisfaction survey. Within the overall test time you will be allocated 120 minutes to complete the 100 questions.

How many questions are in the test?: There are 100 questions in the CPC-MCQ test.

in the CPC-Case Study test there are 3 scenarios each with 15 questions giving a total of 45 questions.
Can I reschedule my test appointment?: Yes – you can reschedule your test appointment providing the request is made 5 working days prior to the test appointment.
I am not very computer literate, will this be a problem?: No – as part of the test there is the option to take a practice session so you can become familiar on how the test works. If you do have any concerns or problems our staff are trained to help.
Is there a practice session so I can get familiar with the exam and computer system?: Yes – there is a short practice section which takes you through the navigation of the exam on screen.
What if I make a mistake can I change my mind?: Yes – there is a simple way to change your answer and select another.
If I get stuck can I miss questions out?: Yes – you can skip questions and come back to them later.
If I finish the test early can I leave?: Yes.
How will I know that I have passed?: At the end of the test you will be given a score report (letter) which will advise whether you have passed your test. This information will be passed on automatically by the Driver Theory Test Service to the RSA CPC Unit.
If I fail, will I be told where I went wrong?: Yes – you will be supplied with a breakdown of your exam by section and category or scenario.
What if I miss my test appointment?: If you fail to arrive at the centre or cancel within 5 days of your test appointment you will lose your test fee.
What if I fail? How soon can I take the test again?: You will have to wait at least three clear working days to make an appointment for a new test.
Will I have to pay again?: Yes you will need to pay each time you make a test appointment.
Is there a limit on how many times I can take the test?: The number of attempts permitted for this test is not restricted.
If I pass what do I do then?: Having successfully completed the Driver CPC theory tests you will need to contact the RSA in order to book the Bus or Truck Driving and Practical tests.
Who provides the Driver CPC Theory Test ?: The Driver CPC Theory Test is provided by Prometric Ireland Ltd, on behalf of the Road Safety Authority.

How much will the test cost?: The cost for the Driver CPC Multiple Choice test is €70. The cost for the Driver CPC Case Study test is €70. Each test is paid for separately.
Certain drivers in the bus and truck licence category are exempt from the changes; can you give me examples of who is exempt?: Drivers of vehicles for non-commercial purposes eg. driving as a volunteer, drivers of emergency or rescue vehicles, drivers of vehicles while delivering driving instruction, drivers of vehicles used by a driver in the course of his/her work provided that driving the vehicle is not the drivers principal occupation e.g. A plumber who uses a light truck to transport his/her materials would not require a Driver CPC. A driver of a truck delivering cement would require a Driver CPC.
